Highland School

The first Highland School was built on Almont Street in 1887, and enlarged in 1910. Constructed of wood, it burned down on January 17,1920.

"A defective chimney was responsible for a fire in the Highland Grammar Schoolhouse, a 2 1-2-story wooden structure on Almont St., Winthrop Highlands, and resulted in the practical destruction of the building at a loss estimated at $90,000 yesterday…..."
"Winthrop, Jan. 17 - Fire practically destroyed the Highland Grammar School, a two and one-hald story structure on Almont St. this forenoon. The firement were handicapped by the heavy snow and a frozen fire hydrant in front of the school...."
"Winthrop, Jan. 17 -The 325 boys and girls who have been attending daily sessions in the Almont St. School Building, which was destroyed by fire Saturday forenoon, had no place to receive tuition this morningl...."
