"With tearstained eyes and audible sobs, five gold star mothers, in the presnce of fully 10,000 persons, this afternoon, on the grounds of the Public Library, unveiled Winthrop's $16,000 memorial to her sons -- 1100 of them -- who fought, suffered and died in the World War."
