"From 1882 to 1940, the residents of Winthrop were served by the narrow gauge Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad (RBR&L), on rails that circled the town. Initially, the rail service connected to Boston by a ferry from Point Shirley. The Winthrop Loop provided service via Orient Heights to the East Boston waterfront and ferry service to Rowe’s Wharf. |
The trains, powered by overhead electric lines, traveled beneath Winthrop Shore Drive and through this park on their way to Ocean Spray Station (now corner of Shirley St. and Veterans Rd.), and the Highlands Station (Crest Ave. playground). The approximate location of the Winthrop Look tracks is represented by the two lines of granite curb traversing the park." |
