For the
1961 Town of Winthrop Annual Report, Sidvin Tucker wrote a detailed history of the Library dating back to 1855, just three years after Winthrop officially became a town. Tucker had been a Library Trustee for 27 years, winning elections after first being appointed following the death of Harry Whorf in 1936. He was also the curator of the Library’s museum.
From 1855 to 1885 Tucker describes how local citizens donated books that were available first at the old schoolhouse and then at a room in the old Town Hall. Privately run until this point, the town voted to make the Library a public resource in 1885. In 1896 the Library moved to a lower floor in the recently completed Center School. In 1897 Eliza Frost made her generous gift that allowed the town to build a permanent library building.
