Channing S. MacDonald (1898-1933) – U.S. Marine Corp. WWI – Channing was barely 17 years old when he joined the U.S. Marine Corp. He served 18 months overseas in most of the major engagements in France most notably the famous Battle of Belleau Wood. Channing was awarded The French Fourragere, Purple Heart, World War I Victory Medal, and Marksmanship Badge. |
Channing became a Winthrop Police Officer in 1928. Sadly, on the morning of May 11, 1933, he reported ill for duty and died later that day in his home on 7 Atlantic St. in Winthrop. He was only 34 years of age. His death is listed as heart trouble, but Channing had a long battle of health issues, including lung and heart problems, from side effects of mustard gas attacks as he fought in World War I. |

plishments permanently attached to the entrance of the Winthrop Police Station. A hockey scholarship in MacDonald’s memory of $1,000 to a WHS hockey player was also added to the program...." |
