Eugene F. Belli (1922-1942) - U.S. Navy, WWII - was a
Radio Operator 3rd Class aboard the destroyer USS Meredith. He was killed in
action on October 15, 1942 off of Guadalcanal. His ship was on a relief mission
to bring supplies to U.S. Marines on Guadaclanal when they were attacked by a
number of Japanese carrier borne aircraft. A running battle ensued in which the
USS Meredith was hit by four bombs and one torpedo. They were able to shoot down
five enemy aircraft, but sank losing all but 80 of the crewmen. Many survivors
in the were machined gunned by Japanese aircraft, and after three days in the
water rescue, before rescue, many were killed by sharks. Radio Operator Belli is
believed to have been killed in the initial attack by a bomb. He was awarded the Purple Heart and is memorialized at the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France. He lived on
Wilshire Street. |
