"Sgt. James T. Macken of Johnson Ave., Winthrop, veteran of 30 months of service in the Pacific, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievment on Iwo Jima. When numerous tractors had been stopped on the beach due to enemy fire Sgt. Macken, with utter disregard for his own safety, aided greatly in clearing the beach by dispatching the tractors to the vital inland dumps."
