Frame made from the Gibbons Elm
and Library key used by David Floyd
This Key to the Frost Library Building was used by David Floyd, Esq. from the completion of this building in 1899 to his death March 17, 1913. Mr. Floyd was a member of the Lyceum Library Committee of Winthrop from 1882 to 1885 and a member of the board of trustees of the Winthrop Public Library from its establishment in 1885 to 1913 being secretary from 1885 to 1889 and chairman during the remaining years. The unremitting service of 30 years was invaluable.

This frame was made from the old Gibbons Elm which stood near the present Thornton railroad station on land allotted to Major General Edward Gibbons, one of the founders of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1637, and near which he built his house. In honor of this noble tree (now because of its infirmities of age removed) and in observation of the 275th anniversary of the “Pullen Point” land allotments, a celebration was held on June 22, 1912. On this occasion a new Gibbons Elm was planted on the railroad station grounds by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company.

Mr. Floyd organized and conducted this successful celebration as chairman of the committee of the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association.

"A picture of the late David Floyd is to be hung in the Public Library and a picture and description of the Givens Elm, the latter to be in A-frame made from the historic Gibbons Elm and which will be embedded the key to the library used by Mr. Floyd for over 15 years.."
