Summit Ave. looking across Winthrop Beach to Cottage Hill

File # 1107
Title Summit Ave. looking across Winthrop Beach to Cottage Hill
Description Summit Ave. looking across Winthrop Beach to Cottage Hill in 1868. Shirley Street on the right of the picture, winding its way to Great Head/ Water Tower Hill was originally a Native American trail. In 1637 it was adopted by early European immigrants and became a cart path serving both the Gov. Winthrop plantation and the Pierce plantation. Later, Dean Winthrop acquired both plantations; his property holdings included all the land depicted in this photo. The building visible halfway down the Beach, on what is now Shore Drive housed "The Saving Station". The Beach had relatively few houses at that time, soon, this scenic barrier beach would be forever transformed as a result of its own success as a summer resort.
