Title |
Metcalf Square and Frost Library circa 1900 |
Description |
Metcalf Square circa 1900.The building to the right was the Gas Electric and Appliance store. In those early days of electricity customers turned in their burned-out light bulbs and were simply handed a new bulb. In the center of the square a driver has stopped his rig to give his horse a chance to refresh himself at the Belcher fountain. Marcena Belcher, a Winthrop born resident of Philadelphia, donated the fountain to the town and it was opened for use in 1887. The Frost Library, in the backdrop of this photo, was built in 1898 at a cost of about $25,000. |
