Eighty Years Ago-April 23rd 1921-newspaper article, Winthrop Transcript-the first seizure of a working still in Winthrop history was made last by Chief McNeil, Lieut. Douglas, Officer Turner, Douglas, and Howat in prohibition enforcement officer Thomas J. McNulty. The place it been observed to several weeks before the raid for which chief McNeil asked officer McNulty to join the local men. The still was in working operation when police entered, with Mr. Cohen busy at work. Inside were found several gallons already made, along with 900 pounds of sugar, bottles of all sizes, funnels, cotton, charcoal, and various utensils. Police hired a Big Mac Been from local storage housemanTewksbury to hallway the cashe, drawing a crowd of several hundred. A poker game in progress was also discovered by police, and three men were arrested. All three were fined $10 on Monday in East Boston District Court. As the Mr. Cohen, 52, he was fined $100. On Tuesday, two brothers from Roxbury came to town full of moonshine and they were arrested. |
