Reference room dedicated to late Dorothy Kinney
"On Sunday June 13, 1982, the Reference Room of the Winthrop Public Library was dedicated to former Librarian Dorothy L. Kinney. Miss Kinney had worked in and administered the Winthrop Public Library from 1914 to 1966.
A large outpouring of her longtime friends and admirers attended the celebration in Miss Kinney's honor. A charming winter scene of the Mount Snow area in Vermont was painted by local artist Mrs. Doris Rand. The watercolor painting that now hangs in the Dorothy L. Kinney Room was collectively purchased by the United Churchwomen · of the Methodist Church, the Popular Authors League, the Judson Circle of the Baptist Church, the Simmons College Group of Winthrop, the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and from Miss Kinney’s friends near and far.
Mr. John Cronin, President of the Board of Library Trustees, introduced Mr. John M. Milne, Jr., a former library trustee, who recounted his many interesting experiences working with Dorothy Kinney over the years. Other trustees paying tribute were Miss Mary McCarthy and Mrs. Lila Taylor. Also present were former library trustees Mrs. Harriet Stevens and Mrs. Doris Murachver.
The Town of Winthrop paid tribute to Miss Kinney's memory by kind words from Selectmen John Van Dalinda and Robert DeLeo.
Mrs. Jacqueline Buck of Belmont, a close friend and associate of Dorothy Kinney and her, family' said Miss Kinney would have loved the Mount Snow watercolor because even though Miss Kinney's· interests were worldwide, New England was the place she loved the most. And on display in the new Dorothy L. Kinney Room is a color photograph of Miss Kinney which will remain there for library friends to see.
Following the dedication ceremony, the large audience was treated to refreshments in the library meeting room. Mrs. Doris McLeod was the gracious hostess of the dedication, and to her we wish to extend our thanks for to make the Miss Kinney dedication a success.
