The Copper Works were operated from 1844 to 1869 by Joseph Warren Revere, the son of Paul Revere. It ran at its peak during the Civil War. Copper ore came from Chile. George Wyman is in the vest and shirt on the right. He and his son son August Wyman lived in the Tewksbury-Wyman House on Siren St. at that time. The kegs they are handling contained gunpowder which was made at the Powder Works in Acton, Mass. Photo taken in 1860.

One of the large old houses in Winthrop located on the west side of Fremont St. It was built about 1865 by Horace C. Dunham. The rebuilt house is still there at 71-89 Fremont Street.

This wreckage was all that remained on the hill at Point Shirley in 1907. Before it was built in the revolutionary days to command Shirley Gut. It was located near the present Siren Street. Photo taken in 1907.
Cottage Park Hotel taken about 1900. Bartlett Road runs along this side of the hotel. The rear part of the hotel facing the street is the old Bartlett House which was built in 1850. This area is located about at the present site of 163 to 181 Bartlett Road. The hotel was owned and operated for many years by Orlando F. Belcher. It was torn down in 1920. Photo taken about 1900.
On the steps of the Metcalf Hospital on Winthrop Street. This group organized the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the town in 1902. The child, is Richard Metcalf, son of Dr. Metcalf. The square is named for him, he was killed in World War I. Dr. Benjamin Hicks Metcalf is seated in the middle of the second row. Harry C. Whorf is seated in the first row holding the pipe. Chelsea Heights & Chelsea from the Highlands Hill. The curving stone wall is on the edge of Revere St. The present Summit Ave. would be on the left center of photo running vertically. The house was built in 1867 by William B. Floyd. In 1880 it was owned by Thomas & Hannah (Sturgis) Floyd. He was probably the son of William Floyd. The house was moved in 1890 to the north side of Almont St. - near Cross St. - when Ft. Banks was built. It exists today (1987) as #62 Almont St. (W.A. Davis). Photo taken in 1868.

Taken July 4, 1902 at Ingleside Park. The tent was put up by the Fire Department. It was 300' x 60'. This was part of the 50th anniversary of the town celebration.
Tewksbury House at 15 Siren St., Point Shirley. This house was torn down in 1904. Photo was taken in 1900. It was said that this house was built about 1750 by the Goldwaites family who founded a dried fish plant at point Shirley in 1753. The house next door at 7 Siren St. is the Sturgis house, also built about 1750 and is still in existence (1987). The Sturgis family lived there and in 1812 operated the Saltworks. File No. 8-22. Beacon Villa Hotel located on the present Villa Ave. The Hotel and restaurant was built in 1865. It was demolished in 1963. In 1963 it was operated by Mrs. Pratt for many years before her death in 1962. She was well-known around the town. Photo taken about 1890. File No. 9-39. Whorf Collection

Item from local newspaper about an old Winthrop relic, Indian Rock, reportedly used by Native Americans to grind maize. The rock was moved from the estate of George Turnbull to the corner of Pauline St. and Pleasant St. Then moved again in about 1860 for the construction of a medical building at the location. Where it went is not known. File No. 20-19. Whorf Collection
This group is thought to be the family of Mr. W.E. Wells. A WInthrop photographer who had a studio in the Wadsworth Block on Winthrop St. in the 1895-1905 era. Location of photo is not known. Photo probably taken about 1910-1915.
This is Morril Frost, a brother of Leonard P. Frost who was a principal of the High School. When Morril Frost died in the 1890s, his widow, Eliza, donated $10,000 to the town to help fund a new library and name it after her husband. The cost was $25,000 in 1899.
